Project Mission
Offer a welcoming space for BSA visitors to gather, pause, and belong, and pay homage to our partnership with the Boston Public Library.

Take a Seat invites visitors to gather, pause, and find a moment of rest within the Boston Society for Architecture. Created as part of the In Common: Sites of Encounter exhibition, this installation explores the theme of belonging through a simple yet generous gesture: offering a place to sit. The modular blue furniture, originally designed for the Boston Public Library’s Free to All project, has been reimagined here along a rotated grid. Visitors are encouraged to linger, read, rearrange the pieces, and make the space their own. The grid is lightly traced on the floor and wall, marking each element’s original position while inviting new configurations. Take a seat is a call to rest, reflect, and connect.

Design Logic
Our modular blue furniture is arranged along a rotated grid, filling both the nook and the adjacent floor area. The pieces serve as book displays and invitations to sit, rest, and stay awhile. Each box is movable, but its original placement is marked with simple masking tape on the floor and wall, subtly referencing the grid that structures the space. On the wall, the prompt to take a seat is inscribed as an open invitation.
